KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City firefighters rescued at least five people from a burning apartment building near Lawn and Scarritt avenues around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Neighbors said the firefighters’ quick response stopped the two-alarm fire inside a three-story apartment building from damaging neighboring homes.
“Pulled multiple people out and saved multiple lives today,” said Jason Spreitzer, Public Information Officer for the Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department. “Our crews made a fast interior attack and saved the building today. Lots of property was saved.”
Spreitzer said the five people who were rescued quickly left the scene after being examined for injuries.
Several neighbors told KCTV5 News the apartment building was supposed to be vacant. They reported having issues with people squatting in empty homes in their neighborhood.
“If they weren’t so fast on the response, that fire would have worked its way down and got into my neighbor’s house and could have gotten into that building over there,” neighbor Steffan McBee said.
McBee said neighbors are frustrated with the response they’ve received after reporting illegal dumping and people living inside vacant homes.
“This building was on fire within the last three months,” McBee said. “The building was supposed to be vacant, boarded up and devoid of power.”
However, the cause of Wednesday’s fire has not yet been determined.
