Property Management 101 – Dress For Success

It is expected that the professional image is maintained at all times, by all staff, no matter what level. We should all adopt a high level of smartness. You might not be a manager yet, but you should dress appropriately with the most proficient image of yourself.

Circumstances will dictate how to dress; however, we have some guidelines below:

Professional business attire is the most conservative type of business wear. This is what you will be expected to wear in the office if you work in accounting, finance or other office based workplaces. For women, this means a business suit or pants suit or dress with a jacket. For men, professional dress means a business suite or blazer, dress pants, business shirt and a tie.

Business casual attire is a relaxed version of the professional business attire. It does not mean that you are going to be casual! This is your office dress code if you work in a semi-conservative work place, but some interviews and events may also call for business casual. Business causal is a shirt with collar and/or a sweater and dress pants with nice shoes for women. Women can also wear a moderate length dress or skirt (meaning knee length or longer). For men, business causal is a polo shirt or a shirt with a collar and/or sweater and a pair of business pants with dress shoes. No tie required.

Hair, make up and accessories should be conservative. Hair should not be brightly colored, natural or highlighted is best. Make up should be showing off your natural features, showing off what you already have. Stockings are suited for business staff and can look professional if a shade close to your skin color is chosen. Lastly, jewelry should be well chosen pieces that do not distract or have vulgar slogans.

Once upon a time, the industry standard was set by what everyone was wearing to work. Once upon a time people actually dressed for work. Not so many people do now. I am still continually surprised by people who approach me in their business to offer service, when they look like they should be relaxing at a café.

Just because others dress down at work, does not mean we need to lower our standards. I believe that Casual dress = casual attitude. Stand out and dress to impress. Dress for success.

Show yourselves as the industry leaders that we are and ensure diligence in the way we dress and act each daily when representing he company, our chosen profession and ourselves. Remember someone important may be watching!
